He was a historian, a philosopher, and a professor at the University of Chicago. He is known for helping people understand religious experiences. One of his main ideas was about how people see the world. He believed that religious experiences create a split in how we see reality. He called one side the sacred space and time. The other side is the profane space and time. This means the world feels different when it is holy.

Eliade had a special theory about how rituals work. He called this the theory of eternal return. He believed that myths and rituals do more than just remember old stories. Instead, he thought people actually participate in those stories through their actions. This makes the sacred feel real and present in the moment. He also studied how certain people, like shamans, connect with the spiritual world.

His father, Gheorghe Eliade, was an officer in the Romanian Land Forces. Mircea grew up in a family that followed the Orthodox faith. As a young boy, he loved the natural world and folklore. He even joined the Romanian Boy Scouts and loved sailing. During World War I, he saw German zeppelins bombing his city. He also remembered a moment of beautiful light in a room. He called this an epiphany, which is a sudden moment of great clarity.
