Mary Douglas was a famous British anthropologist who changed how we study people. Anthropology is the study of human cultures and how groups live together. She was very interested in how people use symbols to understand their world. She also studied how different societies think about risk and danger. Her work helped people see that even simple rules have deep meanings. She became a leading voice in her field through her many books.

In 1949, Mary went to the Belgian Congo to do fieldwork. She lived among the Lele people near the Kasai and Loange rivers. She wanted to see how their society stayed stable without a single leader. She found that older men controlled important things like resources and knowledge. Younger men had to wait for their turn to lead. People used accusations of sorcery to manage tensions between these groups. This was a very important part of how their community worked.

Mary's life began in Sanremo, Italy, in 1921. Her father, Gilbert Tew, worked in the Indian Civil Service in Burma. She grew up in a Roman Catholic family with her sister, Patricia. Later, she studied at St. Anne's College at Oxford University. She worked at the British Colonial Office before returning to Oxford for more study. In the 1950s, she married James Douglas and they had three children. She spent many years teaching at University College London as a professor.

One of her most famous books is called Purity and Danger, published in 1966. In this book, she explained why people have rules about being clean. She argued that these rules are not just about washing away germs. Instead, rituals help people separate what is holy from what is unclean. She also wrote The World of Goods in 1978 with Baron Isherwood. Later, she and Aaron Wildavsky wrote about how cultures choose which risks to fear. These books are still very important to students today.
