One of Eliade's most important ideas involves the concept of hierophany. A hierophany is a manifestation of the sacred in the world. Eliade argued that these moments split human reality into two parts. The first part is sacred space and time. The second part is profane space and time, which refers to ordinary life. This distinction explains how a person perceives a specific moment as holy.

Eliade also developed the theory of eternal return. This theory explains the purpose of myths and rituals in religious life. He believed these practices do more than just commemorate past events. Instead, he argued that followers actually participate in the sacred events. Through ritual, a person can re-enter a sacred time. This allows the religious person to experience the eternal within their own life.

Eliade was born in Bucharest, Romania, to an Orthodox Christian family. His father, Gheorghe Eliade, was an officer in the Romanian Land Forces. During his childhood, Mircea experienced what he called an epiphany. He recalled a moment where an iridescent light made a room look like a palace. He spent years trying to recapture that feeling of plenitude. This sense of nostalgia became a major theme in his later writings.

His academic journey took him far beyond his home country. After studying in Bucharest, he traveled to India for four years. He lived in Calcutta and studied at the University of Calcutta. There, he studied Sanskrit and Indian philosophy under Surendranath Dasgupta. He also spent time at a Himalayan ashram. In 1933, he earned his PhD with a thesis focused on Yoga practices.

His life was not without controversy or complexity. In the 1930s, he expressed support for the Iron Guard, a Romanian fascist organization. This involvement led to frequent criticism after World War II. Despite these criticisms, his academic impact remained massive. He helped bridge the gap between Eastern and Western religious thought. His studies of Indian spirituality helped inform his views on Romanian traditions as well.
