Julius Evola was a prominent Italian philosopher and writer of the twentieth century.

He is best known for his radical traditionalist views. These ideas were often described as antiliberal, antidemocratic, and antiegalitarian. Evola sought to build a system of thought that rejected modern social values. He viewed himself as a thinker belonging to an aristocratic caste. This group aimed to transcend the perceived decay of the modern era. His work blended diverse influences from both Western and Eastern traditions.

Evola's philosophical mechanism centered on the concept of "Tradition." For Evola, Tradition was not a religious practice like Christianity. He did not believe in a god. Instead, he defined Tradition as an eternal, supernatural knowledge. This knowledge provided a foundation of absolute values. These values included authority, hierarchy, order, discipline, and obedience. He believed that human activities could be elevated through these values. For example, war or social interaction could become ritualistic acts. These rituals offered a glimpse of an unchanging, eternal realm.

His worldview was structured around the idea of historical cycles. Evola believed humanity was currently living in the Kali Yuga. This term refers to a Dark Age characterized by materialistic appetites and disorder. He argued that modernity was a temporary period where chaos overcame order. To counter this, he advocated for a "world of Tradition." He believed a primordial rebirth was necessary to restore stability. This rebirth required a return to an ancient, hierarchical social structure. He called those capable of this transcendence "l'uomo differenziato," or the differentiated man.

Evola's intellectual history moved through several distinct stages. He began as an artist in the Italian Dada movement.

He used painting and poetry to attack rationalist cultural values. In the 1920s, he transitioned into esoteric and occult studies. He explored alchemy, Hermeticism, and Western esotericism. He also delved into Eastern mysticism, specifically Tibetan Tantric yoga. He published "The Hermetic Tradition," which is considered an important work on Hermetic philosophy. He later wrote "The Doctrine of Awakening" regarding his studies of Buddhism.

His personal history was marked by significant political and physical events. Born in Rome on May 19, 1898, he was of Sicilian aristocratic descent. He served as an artillery officer during the First World War. In 1943, he fled to Nazi Germany after the fall of the Italian Fascist regime. Some historians suggest he may have worked for the Sicherheitsdienst, an intelligence agency. In 1945, a Soviet shell fragment in Vienna caused permanent paralysis from the waist down. He later faced legal trials in 1951 for glorifying fascism.

He was eventually convicted of certain crimes related to his political stances.

Evola's influence is noted for its extreme and uncompromising nature. His writings contained intense racism, antisemitism, and misogyny. He was often called the "chief ideologue" of the Italian radical right after the war. His philosophy was one of the most consistently anti-popular systems of his time. Even though his views were controversial, he remained a prolific writer. He produced works like "The Theory of the Absolute Individual" in the late 1920s. His ideas regarding the "left-hand path" emphasized using power to achieve spiritual transcendence.

Today, Evola's work connects to several broader academic and political fields. Historians study him to understand the intellectual roots of radical-right movements. Scholars of religion examine his unique and often criticized interpretations of Eastern doctrines. His blending of German idealism and Eastern Tantra remains a subject of study. Some researchers argue he manipulated Eastern concepts to serve political ends. Despite the controversy, his impact on contemporary traditionalist movements continues. He remains a complex figure in the study of twentieth-century political thought.
