He was born in Pescara to Francesco Paolo Rapagnetta D'Annunzio and Luisa de Benedictis. At age 13, he was adopted by his maternal aunt, Anna Lolli. This adoption followed the death of her husband, Antonio D'Annunzio. He attended the Liceo Cicognini in Prato to further his education. By age 16, he was already a published poet. He later studied at the University of Rome La Sapienza.

World War I transformed D'Annunzio from a literary figure into a war hero.

After the war, D'Annunzio turned his attention to nationalist politics. He was dissatisfied with the results of the 1919 Paris Peace Conference. In response, he led a movement to occupy the city of Fiume. He established the Italian Regency of Carnaro, serving as its leader, or "Duce."

This short-lived state was a corporatist regime. Its fundamental principle was music. The flag of this state even used Masonic symbols, such as the Ouroboros. This period showed how deeply his political views were tied to his aesthetic ideas.

D'Annunzio's legacy is complex and continues to be studied today. He was a member of the Grand Lodge of Italy and followed Martinism. His ideas and style were significant influences on Benito Mussolini. Some historians credit him with helping to invent Italian fascism. At the same time, his early work inspired the first phase of the Italian resistance to fascism. He remains a figure who bridged the worlds of art, war, and statecraft.
