The Duino Elegies are ten special poems. A poet named Rainer Maria Rilke wrote them. He began the work in 1912. He stayed at Duino Castle near the sea.

While walking near cliffs, he heard a voice in the wind. This voice gave him the first lines of his poems.

The poems use the symbol of angels. These angels show a great beauty. But this beauty can also feel scary.

Rilke did not use the same ideas found in Christian stories. Instead, he used ideas similar to how angels are shown in Islam. He wrote about life, death, and love. He also wrote about how humans feel alone.

Rilke worked on these poems for ten years. He had hard times with sadness. He also dealt with the First World War. He finally finished them in 1922. He stayed at Château de Muzot in Switzerland.

He said the work felt like a huge storm or a hurricane in his mind. Many writers and artists still study his work today.
