He loved the feeling of flying from a very young age. As a child, he often dreamed about skydiving. He spent time in the Austrian military learning to jump. There, he practiced landing on very small target zones. He also tried professional boxing in 1992. He won his only fight in the welterweight class. His life was full of many different and daring adventures.

Baumgartner became well known for many unique stunts. In 1999, he jumped from the Petronas Towers in Malaysia. In 2003, he skydived across the English Channel. He used a special wing made of carbon fiber for this.

He also jumped from the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. This was one of the lowest BASE jumps ever recorded. He even jumped from the Taipei 101 building in Taiwan. These jumps required great skill and very careful training.

His most famous feat was the Red Bull Stratos project. In 2012, he worked with a team of scientists. They used a huge helium balloon to reach the stratosphere.

He had to wear a special pressurized suit for the jump. At first, the suit made him feel claustrophobic. He worked with a psychologist to overcome this fear. On October 14, 2012, he finally made his big jump. He leaped from a height of 38,969.3 meters.

During his fall, he achieved several amazing world records. He was in free fall for 4 minutes and 19 seconds. He reached a top speed of Mach 1.25. This made him the first human to break the sound barrier without a vehicle. He landed safely in New Mexico, United States. His jump was faster than a previous record set in 1960.
