James Stephen Fossett was a legendary American adventurer and businessman. He was a world-class aviator, a master sailor, and a record-breaking explorer. Fossett is most famous for his ability to complete massive journeys alone. He set more than one hundred world records across five different sports. At the time of his death, sixty of those records still stood. His achievements earned him spots in the National Aviation Hall of Fame and the Explorers Club.

Fossett's drive for adventure began during his youth in the Boy Scouts. He grew up in California and spent much of his time climbing mountains. He started with the San Jacinto Mountains and moved on to even larger peaks. By the age of 13, he had achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He also served as a lodge chief in the Order of the Arrow. In 1961, he worked as a Ranger at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. Fossett often said that Scouting was the most important part of his early life.

To fund his expensive adventures, Fossett built a very successful business career. He earned a degree in economics from Stanford University in 1966. Later, he received an MBA from Washington University in St. Louis. He worked for companies like IBM and Deloitte before finding his niche in financial markets. In 1980, he founded Lakota Trading to rent exchange memberships to floor traders. This business model allowed him to earn millions of dollars. He used this wealth to finance his solo trips around the globe.

Fossett was a pioneer in ballooning and achieved several historic milestones. In 1995, he became the first person to fly solo across the Pacific Ocean in a balloon. In 2002, he achieved a massive goal by flying around the world alone and nonstop. He used a massive, 10-story high balloon called the Spirit of Freedom for this trip. The journey took 13 days, 8 hours, and 33 minutes to complete. During this flight, he traveled over 20,626 miles. The balloon's capsule was so important that it was displayed at the Smithsonian Institution.

His aviation records extended to high-speed jet aircraft as well. In 2005, he completed the first solo, nonstop, unrefueled circumnavigation of the world in an airplane. He flew the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer, which is a single-engine jet. In 2006, he flew the same aircraft around the world again. This second flight lasted 76 hours and 45 minutes. It covered a distance of 25,766 statute miles, setting the record for the longest flight in history.

Beyond the air, Fossett was a dominant force in the world of sailing. The World Sailing Speed Record Council called him the most accomplished speed sailor. Between 1993 and 2004, he set 23 official sailing world records. He used large boats, such as the maxi-catamaran Cheyenne, to break speed records. In 2001, he and his crew set a transatlantic record by a margin of over 43 hours. In 2004, he led a crew to set an around-the-world sailing record of 58 days.

Fossett's life ended while he was pursuing his passion for flight. On September 3, 2007, he disappeared while flying a light aircraft. He was traveling over the Great Basin Desert, located between Nevada and California. Search efforts continued until his plane was discovered wrecked in 2008. His legacy lives on through the many records he set in the sky and on the sea. He remains a symbol of what persistence and endurance can achieve.
