He is widely considered the greatest mountaineer of all time. Messner is famous for his incredible feats in high-altitude climbing. He achieved the first solo ascent of Mount Everest. He also completed the first ascent of Everest without using supplementary oxygen. This means he did not use tanks to help him breathe. Messner has pushed the limits of what humans can do in nature.

\n\nMessner uses a specific method called alpine style mountaineering. This style focuses on climbing with very light equipment. It also requires a minimum of external help from others. Messner prefers this method because he finds it more respectful to nature. He calls the traditional expedition style \"siege tactics.\" Siege tactics involve using heavy equipment and lots of support. Messner believes that climbing with less gear is a more direct way to face a mountain. This philosophy has defined his entire career in the Himalayas.

During this trip, his brother Günther died on the descent. Messner also lost seven toes due to severe frostbite. Despite this tragedy, he continued to climb the world's highest mountains. In 1975, he climbed Gasherbrum I using a new route. This climb took three days, which was very unusual for that time. He later became the first person to climb all fourteen eight-thousanders. These are the fourteen mountains on Earth taller than 8,000 metres.

\n\nMessner's achievements often challenged what experts thought was possible. In 1978, he and Peter Habeler reached the summit of Everest without supplemental oxygen. Many doctors and specialists believed this feat was impossible. Messner proved them wrong by reaching the top using only his own breath. He repeated this feat solo from the Tibetan side in 1980. This was the first solo summit of Everest during the monsoon season. He also completed the Seven Summits without using extra oxygen. This included climbing Mount Vinson in Antarctica in 1986.
