Attenborough's fascination with the natural world began during his childhood in Leicester. He grew up on the campus of University College, where his father served as principal. As a young boy, he spent much of his time collecting fossils, stones, and other natural specimens.

At age eleven, he even supplied newts to a local zoology department for three pence each. A significant turning point occurred in 1936 when he attended a lecture by Grey Owl. This speaker was an advocate for conservation who warned of ecological disaster. Attenborough was deeply moved by the idea that humans could endanger nature through reckless exploitation. This principle became a core part of his lifelong professional credo.

After serving in the Royal Navy, Attenborough joined the BBC in 1950. He initially worked as a radio talk producer after being rejected for other roles. His career in natural history took off with the series Zoo Quest, which first aired in 1954.

This program followed animal-collecting expeditions and established his presence as a presenter. In the 1960s, his role shifted from the field to television management. He served as the controller of BBC Two starting in 1965 and later became the director of programming for BBC Television. In these leadership roles, he transformed the identity of BBC Two by commissioning diverse content. He introduced programs covering the arts, science, archaeology, and even comedy, such as Monty Python's Flying Circus.

During his time in administration, Attenborough made several high-impact decisions for the BBC. He helped launch the channel's color services by commissioning programs like the art history series, Civilisation. He also brought snooker to the BBC through the show Pot Black to showcase the benefits of color television.

However, his primary passion remained the natural world. He eventually resigned from his high-level management positions in 1973. This allowed him to return to full-time filmmaking and pursue his most ambitious project. He wanted to create a series that told the complete story of evolution.

In 1979, the series Life on Earth premiered, marking a new era for wildlife documentaries.

This production was a massive undertaking that required a co-production deal with Turner Broadcasting for funding. The series set a new benchmark for quality in the industry. Attenborough and his team worked closely with scientists to ensure their work was accurate and respected. This approach gained the trust of the scientific community. His narration, often described as a "patented semi-whisper," helped viewers connect deeply with the subjects. The series helped define the specific style of natural history output that the BBC is known for today.

Throughout his life, Attenborough has received immense recognition for his contributions to science and broadcasting. He has earned three Emmy Awards for Outstanding Narration and an Emmy for Outstanding Daytime Personality.

He advocates for several specific changes to protect the planet. These include switching to renewable energy, reducing meat consumption, and preserving more natural areas.

He also discusses the importance of limiting population growth to mitigate environmental impact. His work connects the study of natural history to the modern necessity of global conservation.
