Roald Amundsen was a pioneering Norwegian explorer of the polar regions.

He was a central figure during the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. This era was a time of intense competition to reach the Earth's poles. Amundsen was born in Borge, Norway, in 1872 to Jens Amundsen and Hanna Sahlqvist. Although his mother hoped he would become a doctor, he chose a life at sea. He was deeply inspired by reading narratives of Arctic expeditions. These stories shaped his entire life and career.

Amundsen gained vital experience during his early maritime career. In 1897, he served as first mate on the Belgian Antarctic Expedition.

This expedition used the ship RV Belgica and became the first to overwinter in Antarctica. The ship became trapped in sea ice at 70°30′S. During this difficult winter, the crew learned that eating fresh meat could prevent scurvy. This was because raw meat, including offal, contains vitamin C. This lesson about nutrition was important for future polar travel.

From 1903 to 1906, Amundsen led the first successful traverse of the Northwest Passage.

He used a small sloop named the Gjøa to navigate the passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. He chose a small ship with a shallow draft to hug the coast. While staying at King William Island, he learned survival skills from the Netsilik Inuit. He adopted their use of sled dogs for transport. He also learned to wear animal skins instead of heavy woolen parkas. These Inuit techniques proved invaluable for his later journeys.

Amundsen's most famous achievement was reaching the South Pole. In 1910, he departed Norway on the ship Fram.

He reached Antarctica in January 1911 and established a base at the Bay of Whales. His team used skis and 52 dogs for their journey. They set up supply depots along the Ross Ice Shelf to aid their progress. On 14 December 1911, his party of five became the first to reach the South Pole. They arrived one month before a British team led by Robert F. Scott.

After his success in the south, Amundsen turned his attention to the North Pole. In 1918, he began an expedition using the ship Maud to traverse the Northeast Passage.

This attempt was much harder than his previous trips. The ship became stuck in thick ice near the New Siberian Islands. During this time, Amundsen suffered a broken arm and was attacked by a polar bear. The expedition eventually reached Seattle in 1921 for repairs. This period marked a shift in his approach to exploration.

Amundsen eventually moved from sea voyages to aerial expeditions. He realized that flying offered a new way to reach the poles. On 12 May 1926, he and 15 other men flew the airship Norge over the North Pole. This was the first verified expedition to reach the North Pole.

This success demonstrated how new technology could change the field of exploration. He continued to use planes for his work in the Arctic.

Amundsen's life ended during a mission in the Arctic. In June 1928, he was flying a plane on a rescue mission for another airship. He disappeared during this flight. A search for his remains was conducted, but nothing was found. The search was officially called off in September 1928. His legacy remains tied to the many ways he helped humans understand the most remote parts of our planet.
