The name Titanic comes from the Titans of Greek mythology. This ship was meant to be the best in the world. It was built to offer great comfort and luxury to travelers. Many people believed the ship was unsinkable because of its advanced safety features.

To keep the ship safe, engineers added special parts.

The Titanic had watertight compartments inside its hull. These were sections that could be sealed off to stop water. It also had watertight doors that could be closed remotely. These features were meant to help the ship stay afloat even if it took on water. The ship used three main engines to move through the ocean. Two were large steam engines and one was a steam turbine. This setup helped the ship travel across the sea with great power.

Building such a huge ship was a massive job.

The White Star Line wanted to compete with other big shipping companies. Their chairman, J. Bruce Ismay, wanted ships that focused on size and luxury. The design process involved many experts in Belfast. Thomas Andrews Jr. was the chief naval architect for the project. Other leaders included Lord Pirrie and Alexander Carlisle. They worked to make the ship a masterpiece of engineering. Construction was a very expensive and careful task.

Life on the Titanic was very different depending on your ticket.

First-class passengers enjoyed fancy things like a swimming pool. They also had a gymnasium and a Turkish-style bath. Some cabins even had their own private porches. Other passengers were emigrants from Europe. These people were moving to the United States or Canada for new lives. The ship carried about 2,224 people in total.
