The Hillsborough disaster was a very sad event in British sports history. It happened on 15 April 1989 at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield, England.

A big football match was taking place between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. This match was an FA Cup semi-final. Many fans traveled to see the game. Because of how the stadium was set up, the fans had to use specific paths to enter. This created a very crowded situation before the game even started.

The disaster happened because of a crowd crush in the standing areas.

Shortly before the game began, a police leader named David Duckenfield ordered exit gate C to be opened. He did this to try and ease the crowding outside. However, this caused a huge rush of people into the central pens. The pens became much too full very quickly. This led to a fatal crush where people could not move safely. A total of 97 people died because of this event.

There were also 766 people who were injured.

At first, the truth was hard to find. In the days after the match, the South Yorkshire Police told the press false stories. They suggested that the Liverpool fans were responsible because of drinking or bad behavior.

This was not true. A report called the Taylor Report was released in 1990. It found that the main cause was a failure of crowd control by the police. Even after this, many people continued to blame the fans. It took many years for the real facts to come out clearly.

Families of the victims fought for a long time to get justice.

In 2009, a group called the Hillsborough Independent Panel was formed to look at the evidence again. Their report in 2012 showed that the police had tried to shift the blame onto the fans. This led to new investigations, such as Operation Resolve. From 2014 to 2016, new inquests were held to find the truth. These inquests ruled that the fans were unlawfully killed. They said the police and ambulance services failed in their duty of care.

This tragedy changed how people watch sports in England.

Before this, many stadiums had high steel fences to keep fans away from the pitch. After the disaster, these fences were removed. Most large English stadiums also replaced standing areas with seats. This change helps keep crowds much safer today. We remember the people lost through many memorials. These sites help people honor the lives that were taken.
