It was built in Belfast by Harland and Wolff. Many people called it unsinkable. This was because it had watertight doors. These doors could close to keep water out.

The ship was very fancy. It had a swimming pool and a gym. Some people were very wealthy. Others were moving to America for a new life. The ship was the largest in the world then.

On April 15, 1912, the ship hit an iceberg. This happened during its first big trip. The ship began to sink in the ocean. Sadly, about 1,500 people died. There were not enough lifeboats for everyone. The ship only had twenty boats. These boats could only hold 1,178 people. That was only about half of the people on board. Captain Edward John Smith went down with the ship. This event led to new rules for sea safety. Now, ships must have enough boats for everyone.
