Ismay was born in Crosby, Lancashire, on 12 December 1862. His father, Thomas Henry Ismay, started the White Star Line. After his father died in 1899, Bruce Ismay took over the family business. He was a very successful leader who helped the company grow. He even became the president of a large group of shipping companies called the International Mercantile Marine Company in 1904.

Ismay had a specific plan for how his ships should work. He wanted to build ships that were not just big, but also very fancy. He decided to build the "Big Four" ships to be larger than previous ones. Later, he planned the Olympic-class liners, which included the Titanic. These ships were designed for luxury to attract wealthy travelers.

Instead of focusing only on speed, he focused on comfort and size. He even decided to carry only 16 lifeboats on the first two ships. This was the smallest number allowed by the rules at that time.

In April 1912, Ismay was traveling on the Titanic during its first trip. On the night of 14 April, the ship hit an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean. It soon became clear that the ship would sink. Ismay managed to get into a small boat called Collapsible C. This boat was launched less than 20 minutes before the ship went under. He was later picked up by a rescue ship named the Carpathia. During the journey, he stayed in a cabin and did not eat any solid food.

After the sinking, Ismay faced many difficult questions. He had to testify before a Senate committee in the United States. He also spoke at a British inquiry led by Lord Mersey.

Many people in the news were very angry with him. Some newspapers called him a coward for leaving the ship. They felt he should have stayed to help others. However, some people defended him. They said he helped many women and children get into boats first. One witness said he only joined a boat when no more women were nearby.

Because of the controversy, Ismay's life changed a lot. He resigned from his high positions in 1913. He lived until 17 October 1937 and is buried in Putney Vale.

Even many years later, people still talk about him in movies. Some films show him as a villain who pressured the captain to go too fast. Others show him in a more sympathetic way. His story is still a big part of the history of the Titanic. It shows how one person's actions can be seen in many different ways.
