During the 1930s and World War II, Watson's company was involved in very serious matters. IBM provided data processing machines to Nazi Germany. These machines helped the Nazi regime track people during the Holocaust. Critics say Watson's focus on profit led to this relationship. Watson did eventually send back a German medal he had received in 1940. At the same time, IBM helped the United States military. Watson even made a rule to keep his profits from the U.S. government at only 1%.
