Herman Hollerith was a very important inventor and businessman.

He helped change how we process large amounts of information. Before his work, counting data was a slow and hard job. He created a special machine to help summarize facts quickly. This machine used something called punched cards to store data. These cards were the start of a new era for machines. His ideas helped build the foundation for modern data processing.

His machine worked using a clever way to read holes. Each card had specific spots arranged in rows and columns. A hole in one spot could mean a person was married. No hole in that same spot could mean they were single. The machine used electricity to sense these holes in the cards. When a hole was found, it would use magnets to move a counter. This process is called electromechanical tabulation. It allowed the machine to count or sort data very fast.

Hollerith was born in Buffalo, New York, in 1860. His parents were immigrants from Germany. He was a very bright student and studied hard. He graduated from the Columbia School of Mines at age 19. Later, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in 1890. He also taught mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He spent much of his later life living in Washington, D.C.

In 1884, Hollerith filed his first patent for his system. He worked with the United States Census Bureau to use his machines. During the 1890 census, his tools were a huge success. They helped finish the work in six years instead of eight. His machines were also used in many other places. Countries like England, Italy, Germany, and Russia used his equipment. He even invented the first keypunch and an automatic card-feed mechanism.

Hollerith started his own business to sell his inventions. In 1911, his company joined with others to form a new firm. This new group was called the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company. In 1924, the company changed its name to IBM. IBM became one of the most successful companies in the 20th century. Hollerith died in 1929 at the age of 69. His ideas about using cards for data lasted for almost a century.
