An Wang was a brilliant inventor and a computer engineer. He was born in Shanghai, China, on February 7, 1920. His father taught English at a school near the city. An Wang studied electrical engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He finished his degree in 1940. In June 1945, he moved to the United States. He went to Harvard University for graduate school. He earned a PhD in applied physics in 1948.

At Harvard, Wang worked with a man named Howard Aiken. They worked on the Mark IV, which was a fully electronic computer. Wang helped invent a special device called a pulse transfer controlling device. He worked on this with a schoolmate named Way-Dong Woo. This device used something called write-after-read. This new way of working made magnetic-core memory possible. Magnetic-core memory is a way for computers to store information. This was a very important step for early computer technology.

In June 1951, Wang started his own company called Wang Laboratories. At first, the business was small. He sold one third of the company to a tool maker to get money. In 1955, he sold his core memory patent to IBM. He then incorporated his company with his schoolmate, Ge-Yao Chu. The company grew much larger over the years. By 1970, the company had 1,400 employees and large sales.

Wang Laboratories became famous for making word processors. These are machines used to type and edit text. In 1974, they began making these machines. By 1976, they sold a version that many people could use at once. They also made desktop electronic calculators. One special machine was the Wang 2200. It was one of the first desktop computers with a large screen. The company also made minicomputers like the Wang VS system.

An Wang was a very successful businessman. In 1984, Forbes magazine said he was the fifth richest American. He won the Medal of Liberty in 1986. He also joined the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1988. He gave much money to help hospitals and theaters. For example, he gave $4 million to a hospital in Massachusetts. Many schools now carry his name to honor him. An Wang died of cancer in 1990.
