Wan Laiming was a very important artist from China. He is often called China's first animator. He was one of the Wan brothers. Together, they helped start the whole animation industry in China.

His work helped Chinese films reach a high international level. He led the Shanghai Animation Film Studio for many years. People remember him for making animation a proud part of Chinese culture.

Making moving pictures started with small experiments. In the early 1920s, the brothers worked in a small attic. They used a thick book to practice. They drew a cat and a mouse on the pages. By bending the corners of the book, they made the cat look like it was catching the mouse.

They also studied tools like the zoetrope. This is a device that uses spinning motion to make pictures move. They learned these ideas from films made in the United States.

History shows how hard the brothers worked to succeed. In 1922, they made a short film called Shuzhendong Chinese Typewriter. This was a commercial for the Commercial Press. Later, in 1924, they made a black and white film called Uproar in the Studio. This film lasted between 10 and 12 minutes.

By 1935, they created their first animation with sound. It was called The Camel’s Dance. These early steps helped build a new way to tell stories.

Life was not always easy for the Wan brothers. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, they moved from Shanghai to Wuhan. They used animation to share messages during this difficult time.

In 1940, they worked at the Xinhua Film Company. Even when money was hard to find, Wan Laiming promised the work would be worth it. They finished a long film called Princess Iron Fan. This was a very proud achievement for the people in the city.

Later in his life, Wan Laiming reached even greater heights. In 1956, he made the first color animation called Why is the Crow Black-Coated.

He also worked on the famous film Havoc in Heaven. This movie won many international awards. These prizes showed the world that China could make high-quality animation. Wan Laiming died in Shanghai in 1997. Today, a statue stands to honor his great work.
