He wants his work to feel like it belongs to its place. Many modern buildings look the same all over the world. Wang Shu prefers to use old ways to make new things. He believes that architecture should connect people to their history and memory. His buildings often look like they grew naturally from the land. This way of working is sometimes called critical regionalism. It means making new designs that respect local culture.

To make his art, Wang Shu uses traditional materials and old techniques.

He often uses materials that have been saved from old buildings. For example, the Ningbo Museum uses bricks that were recycled from demolished sites. This helps keep the spirit of the old neighborhood alive. He even teaches his students to work with their hands. They must spend a year learning basic carpentry and bricklaying. Wang believes you must understand materials to truly make art with them.

Wang's journey began in Ürümqi, in the far west of China. He was born on November 4, 1963. As a child, he loved to draw and paint. His mother helped him learn by giving him access to books. Later, he studied architecture at Southeast University in Nanjing. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1985 and a master's degree in 1988. After college, he moved to Hangzhou to be near beautiful landscapes. He eventually earned a PhD from Tongji University in 2000.

In 1997, Wang and his wife, Lu Wenyu, started Amateur Architecture Studio.

They chose this name to protest buildings that have no soul. They want to stop the loss of old urban neighborhoods. Wang has won many important awards for his skill. In 2005, his Five Scattered Houses won the Holcim Award. In 2008, he finished the Ningbo Museum after a big competition. That museum won the Lu Ban Prize, which is China's top architecture award. In 2012, he won the Pritzker Prize, the world's highest honor for architects.

Wang Shu's life shows how art and engineering can work together. His father was a musician and an amateur carpenter. His mother was a teacher and a librarian. Today, Wang is the Dean of the School of Architecture at the China Academy of Art. He works closely with his wife, who is also an architect. His buildings, like the Ningbo Museum of Art, show his unique style. They blend new ideas with very old traditions. This makes his work feel both modern and timeless.
