He studies how cities work and how people live in them. Some people call him a leader of his generation. Others see him as someone who likes to break old rules. He is a professor at Harvard University in the United States. In 2000, he won the Pritzker Prize for his work. This is a very important award for architects. In 2008, Time magazine named him one of the most influential people in the world.

Koolhaas has a special way of looking at buildings. He often thinks about the "Program" of a space. This is a word for how people use the rooms inside. He likes to mix different activities together in one place. He calls this "cross-programming." For example, he once thought about putting running tracks inside a tall skyscraper. He also looks at how shopping and big crowds change our cities. He writes books to explain these big ideas to the world.

His journey began in the Netherlands. He was born in Rotterdam in 1944. His father was a writer and his grandfather was an architect. As a young man, he worked as a journalist. Later, he studied architecture in London and New York. In 1975, he started his own office called OMA. He worked with other architects like Zaha Hadid. Together, they created new styles that were different from older ways of building.

Koolhaas has worked on many huge projects around the globe.

He even suggested a design for a new flag for the European Union. These projects show how he uses shapes to change how we see cities.

His work connects art with the way the world is changing. He studies "non-cities," which are places that grow very fast without many rules. He looks at how huge cities like Lagos in Nigeria function. He also studies how shopping habits affect our lives. Some critics think his ideas are a bit cynical or dark. However, many people find his views to be a realistic look at modern life. He helps us notice the energy in crowded, busy places.
