He helped start a whole new way to tell stories. His work helped movies grow in China and Hong Kong. He was a director and a producer. He also acted in his own films. His life shows how much one person can change art.

Making movies in the early 1900s was very different. In 1913, Lai directed a film called "Zhuangzi Tests His Wife." At that time, women were often reluctant to act in shows. Because of this, Lai played the role of the wife himself.

Lai's journey began in Yokohama, Japan. He was born there in 1893 to Chinese parents. His family was from Xinhui in Guangdong.

He grew up in Hong Kong and went to St. Paul's College. As a young boy, he saw newsreels from the Russo-Japanese War. This was his first look at the world of cinema. This early spark led to a long career in film.

Lai used movies to help his country modernize. In 1922, he started a production company called Minxin.

He moved this company to Shanghai in 1925. His films often focused on news and culture. He filmed the leader Sun Yat-sen during the 1920s. He even recorded the Northern Expedition. In 1930, he helped start the Lianhua Film Company. This was one of the "Big Three" studios of that decade.

History changed how Lai lived and worked. In 1937, the Empire of Japan attacked Shanghai. This war destroyed many film studios, including Lianhua.
