He was born in Japan in 1893. He grew up in Hong Kong. He loved movies from a young age. In 1913, he made the first film in Hong Kong. The film was called "Zhuangzi Tests His Wife." In that movie, Lai played the role of the wife. This was because women did not want to act in shows then.

Lai started a company called Minxin. He wanted movies to help his country. His films showed news and culture. He even filmed leaders like Sun Yat-sen. Later, he helped start a big studio called Lianhua Film Company. This was one of the "Big Three" studios in the 1930s.

War in 1937 destroyed many film studios in Shanghai. Lai went back to Hong Kong in 1938. He was married to an actress named Lim Cho-cho. His daughter and granddaughter also became actresses. Many people still study his great work today.
