Wan Laiming was a famous artist from China. He helped start the Chinese animation industry. He was one of the Wan brothers. He is often called China's first animator.

As children, the Wan brothers loved to experiment. They studied how to make pictures move. One night, they used a thick book. They drew a cat and a mouse. They bent the book corners to make the cat catch the mouse. In 1922, they made a short film for a typewriter. Later, they made a short film called Uproar in the Studio. It was in black and white.

By 1935, they made a film with sound. It was called The Camel’s Dance. During a war, they made films to share messages. They wanted to make films as good as those from America. They made a long film called Princess Iron Fan. This was a proud work for their country.

Wan Laiming later led the Shanghai Animation Film Studio. In 1956, he made a color film. It was called Why is the Crow Black-Coated. His work on the film Havoc in Heaven won many awards. These awards showed the world that China made great animation.
