He was born in 1910 in Jiaxing. As a young boy, he lived in very poor conditions. He could not stay in school at first. Later, teachers helped him go back to learn art.

In 1935, Zhang made a character named Sanmao. Sanmao was a young boy. Zhang wanted to show how hard life was for orphans. He used these comics to show the struggles of children during war. Sanmao became a symbol for those children.

Zhang worked for many publishing houses in Shanghai. He faced hard times during the Cultural Revolution. He had to stop his work for ten years. He returned to his Sanmao comics in 1977.

Later, Zhang got a disease called Parkinson's. This made it very hard for him to draw. He did not stop his work. He kept making art until 1986.

Many people love Sanmao. The character has been in movies and plays. In 2007, Sanmao was a mascot for the Special Olympics. People also made a book award in his name.
