He was born in Ulverston, England. His parents worked in the theatre. This helped him love acting from a young age. He first performed on stage in Glasgow when he was sixteen. He learned many funny tricks in music halls. He used a black bowler hat as part of his act.

Laurel worked with many people before finding his best partner. He even worked with Charlie Chaplin in a group of actors. Later, he met Oliver Hardy. They appeared in a short film called The Lucky Dog in 1921. They did not become an official team until late 1927.

The two men had great chemistry. They made many short films and even films with sound.

People loved their comedy very much. Laurel won an honorary award from the Academy. He also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A bronze statue of the duo stands in his home town.
