arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The cinema of mainland China is a huge and exciting world of storytelling. It is one of three main types of Chinese-language film. This includes the film industries of Hong Kong and Taiwan too. Today, China is a giant center for making movies. It is home to the world's largest film studios. These places are called the Oriental Movie Metropolis and Hengdian World Studios. In 2012, China became the second-largest movie market in the world. Only the United States was larger at that time.

Movies first arrived in China in 1896. They were shown in busy port cities like Shanghai and Hong Kong. China was actually one of the very first countries to see films. This happened because Louis Lumière sent a cameraman to Shanghai. The first screening was in Shanghai on August 11, 1896. It was shown as an "act" during a variety show. In November 1905, China made its first film in Beijing. This film was a recording of a Peking opera called Dingjun Mountain.

As time went on, filmmakers began to focus more on Chinese culture. They created "traditional costume films" like Romance of the Western Chamber. They also made Wuxia films, which are action stories. In the 1930s, movies became divided by politics. Some filmmakers joined the "Left-Wing Film Movement." These makers wanted films to show real life and social struggles. They made movies like The Goddess and Spring Silkworms. Other makers preferred "soft film." This style focused more on how the camera moved and how scenes were edited.

In the late 20th century, a new style called "main melody" began. These films are meant to build national pride. They often use Hollywood-style music and big special effects. Many include a "red song" to support the country. The government helps pay for these films. They spend between one and two million RMB every year to support them. Some famous examples are The Opium War and The Founding of a Republic. These movies often tell stories about important leaders or military history.

There is also a group called the "Sixth Generation" of filmmakers. These artists often work with very little money. They might use small digital cameras or 16 mm film. Their movies often look like real documentaries. They tell stories about everyday people in big cities. For example, Jia Zhangke made a movie called Xiao Wu about a pickpocket. Another director, Wang Xiaoshuai, made a film called The Days for only $10,000. These filmmakers show the many different sides of modern life.
