Marcus Goldman was a very important businessman. He started a famous company called Goldman Sachs. This company grew into one of the largest banks in the world.

He was born on December 9, 1821. He grew up in a place called Trappstadt in Bavaria. His father, Wolf Goldmann, was a farmer. His mother was named Bella Katz Oberbrunner. Marcus lived a very different life before he became a banker.

Marcus moved to America in 1848. He left Germany during a time of big changes. When he arrived, his name changed to Marcus Goldman. At first, he did many different jobs. He was a peddler with a horse-drawn cart. He also ran a clothing store on Market Street in Philadelphia. Later, he moved to New York City in 1869. He wanted to find work that could make more money.

In New York, Marcus started a new kind of business. He set up an office on Pine Street. He called his business "Marcus Goldman & Co." He worked as a broker of IOUs. An IOU is a note that shows someone owes money. This was a way to help businesses move money. He could handle $5 million worth of these papers every year. This was a huge amount for one person to do alone.

His business grew much larger over many years. In 1882, he invited Samuel Sachs to join him. Samuel was his son-in-law. They changed the name to M. Goldman and Sachs. Soon, the firm was turning over $30 million in paper each year. In 1885, Marcus added his son Henry to the business. This is when it became Goldman Sachs & Co. The firm joined the New York Stock Exchange in 1896.

Marcus had a large and close family. He married Bertha Goldman when she was 19 years old. They had five children together. Many people in the business were part of the same family. For fifty years, the partners were often related by marriage. His daughter Louisa married Samuel Sachs. This kept the family and the business linked together. Marcus died in the summer of 1904 in New Jersey.
