Marcus Goldman was born in Bavaria in 1821. He worked as a schoolteacher there. In 1848, he moved to the United States.

At first, Marcus was a peddler. He sold goods from a horse-drawn cart. He also ran a small clothing store. In 1869, he moved to New York City. He wanted to find better work. He started a business on Pine Street. He was a broker of IOUs. An IOU is a note that says someone owes money.

His business grew very fast. In 1882, he asked his son-in-law, Samuel Sachs, to join him. They changed the name to M. Goldman and Sachs. Later, Marcus added his son, Henry, to the firm. This is when it became Goldman Sachs & Co.

By then, the firm was very big. It turned over $30 million in paper each year. In 1896, the firm joined the New York Stock Exchange. This is a place where people buy and sell stocks. Marcus had a wife and five children. He died in New Jersey in 1904.
