He founded a famous banking family. This family was very powerful in Europe. They led international finance for many years. This period lasted from the 1820s to the 1870s. Some people call him a founding father of international finance. In 2005, a magazine ranked him as a very influential businessman. He changed how money moved across different countries.

His business grew through many careful steps. First, he learned about trade and money. He studied under a banker named Jacob Wolf Oppenheimer. Mayer learned how to trade goods and exchange different currencies.

Later, he became a dealer in rare coins. This work helped him gain the trust of leaders. He eventually provided many banking services to important people. He even began to issue his own international loans.

Mayer was born around 1744 in Frankfurt, Germany. He lived in a Jewish neighborhood called the Judengasse. His family name came from a house sign. The sign showed a red shield. This is why the name means "with the red shield."

His father, Amschel Moses Rothschild, was also a trader. Mayer had many brothers and sisters. He married Guttle Schnapper in 1770. He worked hard to build his business in the Holy Roman Empire.

Many specific events helped the family expand. In 1798, his son Nathan went to England. Nathan started a bank in the City of London. In 1811, another son named Jacob went to Paris. This helped the family work in many places at once. In 1811, a new law gave Jewish citizens more rights. Mayer helped finance this change in Frankfurt. He also helped find gold for the British government. These actions made the family very wealthy and well-known.

The Rothschild family is often linked to the "five arrows" of banking. This refers to his five children who spread out across Europe. Amschel stayed in Frankfurt to run the main bank. Salomon moved to Vienna. Nathan grew the London bank. Calmann set up a branch in Naples. Jacob opened a large bank in Paris.
