On May 1, 1776, Weishaupt started a secret group called the Illuminati. The name comes from a Latin word meaning "enlightened." Weishaupt used the secret name "Brother Spartacus" within the group. He wanted to use reason to help people think for themselves. Some people say the group wanted equality and freedom for everyone. Others believe the group wanted to fight against religion.

The group worked in a very special way. Members lived in small, separate groups called cells. Each person reported to a leader they did not know. This helped keep the group a secret. A man named Adolph Knigge helped organize the group's rituals. They wanted to perfect human nature through new ways of learning. However, the government of Bavaria did not like these ideas.

In 1784, the government banned the Illuminati. They thought the group's writings were dangerous to the state. Weishaupt lost his job at the university. He had to flee Bavaria and move to Gotha. He lived there for many years and wrote many books. He died on November 18, 1830. His life shows how much one person's ideas can change history.
