Adam studied law at a university. He became a professor of law in 1772. He loved the idea of the Enlightenment. This was a time when people used reason to understand the world.

On May 1, 1776, Adam started a secret group. He called it the Illuminati. The name means "enlightened." Adam used the name "Brother Spartacus" in the group. Some say the group wanted equality and freedom for all. Others say they wanted to fight against religion.

The group was very secret. Members worked in small cells. Each person reported to a leader they did not know. Adam and a man named Adolph Knigge grew the group. They used rituals to bring in new members.

In 1784, the government of Bavaria banned the group. They thought the group's writings were dangerous. Adam lost his job. He had to leave his home and move to Gotha. He spent his later years writing many books. Adam died in 1830.
