He led the Samsung Group for many years. He was the chairman from 1987 to 2008. He then returned to lead the company until 2020. Samsung started as a small business selling fruit and dried fish. Lee's father, Lee Byung-chul, was the founder of the group. Lee Kun-hee helped turn the company into a giant. It now makes smartphones, memory chips, and televisions. It also works in shipbuilding and construction.

Lee changed how the company worked to make it better. In 1993, he noticed Samsung made many low-quality goods. He wanted the company to compete with rivals like Sony Corporation. He held a meeting in Frankfurt, Germany. This meeting is called the Frankfurt Declaration. He told his leaders to focus on quality. He even said to change everything except their wives and kids. This helped Samsung become the largest maker of televisions by 2006.

Lee's life also included some difficult legal moments. He faced trouble regarding bribery and tax evasion. In 1996, he was convicted for paying bribes to a president. He was later pardoned by President Kim Young-sam. In 2008, police searched his home and office. This was part of a probe into a slush fund. He was found guilty of financial wrongdoing in 2008. The court fined him 110 billion won. However, President Lee Myung-bak pardoned him again in 2009.

Lee was one of the wealthiest people in the world. He was the richest person in South Korea starting in 2007. At his death, his net worth was about US$21 billion. Samsung was worth about US$300 billion during his time. He had four children, including his son Lee Jae-yong. His daughter Lee Boo-jin leads the Hotel Shilla chain. His other daughter Lee Seo-hyun and son were also part of his family. One daughter, Lee Yoon-hyung, passed away in 2005.

Many things from Lee's life continue today. He suffered a heart attack in 2014. He stayed in a coma until he died in 2020. He was 78 years old at that time. His death led to a very large inheritance tax. This tax was about 12 trillion won. He also left a huge collection of art. It has more than 23,000 works of art. Some say a new museum might be built for it.
