Alfred P. Sloan was a very important leader in the American car industry.

He spent many years running General Motors, which became one of the largest companies in the world. Sloan was an engineer by training, having graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1895. He started his career by managing a company called Hyatt Roller Bearing. This company made small metal parts used in many different machines. One of their first big customers was the Oldsmobile car company. Later, the Ford Model T also used these bearings. This early work taught Sloan a lot about how to make things in large amounts.

Sloan changed the way companies work and how people buy things. He created a system called a ladder of success for car buyers. This meant a person could start with a cheap Chevrolet. As they earned more money, they could move up to a Pontiac or an Oldsmobile. Eventually, they might buy a Buick or a luxury Cadillac.

He also introduced annual styling changes to cars. This led to a concept called planned obsolescence. This is the idea of making new styles so people want to replace their old cars. He even helped create a way for people to use loans to buy cars. This meant they did not have to save money for many years before driving.

Sloan's leadership helped General Motors grow very quickly. He became the president of the company in 1923 and the chairman in 1937. Under his direction, General Motors became the largest industrial business the world had ever seen. He used math and statistics to manage the huge company. He looked at things like the return on investment to see if the business was doing well. This helped the company stay at the top of the industry for over 70 years. He also faced hard times when workers organized for better rights. During the Flint sit-down strike in 1936, the workers won the right to be represented by a union.

Sloan also spent much of his life helping others through giving. In 1934, he started the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. This is a nonprofit group that helps with science, technology, and education.

The foundation gave money to start many important programs. It helped create the Sloan School of Management at MIT in 1952. It also gave money to schools at Cornell and Stanford. His name is even used for the Sloan-Kettering Institute in New York. By the end of 2023, the foundation held about $2.38 billion in assets. It has even given large grants to help the Wikimedia Foundation.

Today, we can see Sloan's impact in our everyday lives. When you see a new car model come out every year, that is an idea he helped start. When people use a loan to buy a large item, they are using a system he helped build. His life shows how one person can change how an entire industry works. He wrote about his life in a book called My Years with General Motors. Even though people have different opinions about his methods, his work changed the world. He was inducted into the U.S. Business Hall of Fame in 1975. Sloan died in 1966, but his influence remains in how we shop and work.
