Durant is best known for founding General Motors, or GM. He also helped start the Chevrolet company. He had a new way of running a business. He created a system where one large company owned many different brands. Each brand seemed independent and sold different types of cars. This helped him build a huge business empire.

Durant used a step-by-step way to grow his companies. First, he used his success in making horse-drawn carriages to learn about business. In 1904, he took control of the Buick Motor Company. He used his money and resources to help Buick succeed. Buick became the best-selling car in America. Then, Durant began buying other car companies to join Buick. He bought Oldsmobile in 1908 and Cadillac in 1909. He also bought many companies that made parts like paint and varnish. This way of owning everything needed to build a car is called vertical integration.

Durant's journey started in Boston, Massachusetts. He was born on December 8, 1861. His family later moved to Flint, Michigan. In 1886, he started the Flint Road Cart Company with Josiah Dallas Dort. They turned $2,000 into a company worth $2 million. By the start of the 1900s, his carriage company was the largest in the US. Later, he founded the General Motors Holding Company on September 16, 1908. He even worked with Samuel McLaughlin in Canada to build Buick engines.

Durant faced many hard jobs during his life. In 1910, he bought too many companies too fast. This caused a cash shortage, and he was forced out of GM. However, he did not give up on his dreams. He partnered with Louis Chevrolet in 1911 to start Chevrolet. By 1916, Durant managed to regain control of General Motors. He served as the president of GM until 1920. He also started Durant Motors in 1921 to compete with Ford. He wanted to offer cars for every kind of person and budget.

We can see Durant's ideas in the cars we see today. He believed that different people have different tastes and amounts of money. Instead of making just one type of car, he made many. Some cars were for people who wanted to save money. Other cars were very fancy for wealthy people. This idea of having many brands under one roof is how many big companies work now. Even though he faced many struggles later in life, his big ideas changed how the whole world travels.
