He was born in Paris in 1878. His parents were Levie Citroën and Masza Amelia Kleinman. His family came from the Netherlands. Long ago, a grandfather in the Netherlands was a fruit seller. The family name meant "lime man" in Dutch. Later, the name changed to mean "lemon." André grew up wanting to be an engineer. He loved the books of Jules Verne. He also watched the Eiffel Tower being built. This made him want to build things.

In 1900, André visited Poland. This was the home country of his mother. While there, he saw a carpenter working. The man was making special gears. These gears had a fishbone shape. They are called double helical gears. These gears were quiet and worked very well. André bought the patent for this idea. This special gear shape inspired the Citroën logo.

He used this knowledge in his many jobs. He was a leader at a company called Mors in 1908.

André became a very famous expert in making things. During World War I, he helped make many weapons. He was a leading production expert in France. In 1919, he helped lead a group to build steam cars. That project did not work out well. So, André started his own car company in 1919. His company grew very quickly. By 1932, it was the fourth largest car maker in the world. He wanted to make cars that were very advanced.

André worked hard to make a car called the Traction Avant. This car had a new design for the body. It used a system called unibody. Developing this car and a new factory cost a lot. Because of these costs, the company went bankrupt in 1934. A tire company named Michelin took over the business. Michelin had already provided tires for the cars. The Traction Avant became a great success later on. It was made until 1957, except during World War II.

André died in Paris in 1935. He died from stomach cancer.
