He was a pioneer who helped build a huge company. He was born on April 2, 1875, in Wamego, Kansas. His parents were Anna Maria and Henry Chrysler. His father was a Canadian who worked on trains. Walter grew up in Ellis, Kansas, where his home is now a museum. He worked very hard to learn how machines work.

Walter started his career working with trains. He was a machinist and a mechanic for railroads. He took special classes from a school in Pennsylvania to learn more. He moved to many places like Colorado and Wyoming to gain knowledge. He worked his way up to being a manager for big railroad shops. In 1911, a banker asked him about making cars. This meeting changed his whole life. He left the railroad world to join the Buick Motor Company.

At Buick, Walter learned how to make cars more efficiently. He found ways to lower the cost of making them. For example, he stopped using very expensive finishes on the parts under the car. In 1916, a man named William Durant offered him a huge deal. Durant offered him $10,000 a month and a big bonus. Walter accepted the job and ran Buick for three years. He eventually left Buick in 1919 because he had different ideas for the future.

After leaving Buick, Walter started his own business. In 1925, he formed the Chrysler Corporation in Detroit, Michigan. He used the Maxwell Motor Company to help start his new firm. He also created brands like Plymouth and DeSoto. In 1928, he bought the Dodge Brothers company and renamed it Dodge.
