He was born on August 4, 1945, in Oakland, California. He grew up in Lawrence, Kansas. When he was 17, he felt inspired by President John F. Kennedy. Kennedy had set a hard job to send a man to the moon. This helped motivate Mulally to study science and engineering. He later earned degrees from the University of Kansas and MIT.

Mulally spent much of his early career at Boeing. He started there as an engineer in 1969. He worked on many famous planes like the 747 and 777.

One of his biggest wins was leading a team for the 757 and 767 projects. They built the first all-digital flight deck for a commercial plane. A flight deck is the cockpit where pilots fly. This new design allowed a crew of only two people to fly long distances. This was a huge change for the aviation world.

In 2006, Mulally became the leader of the Ford Motor Company. At that time, Ford was facing a very hard time. The company was losing a lot of money.

To protect the company, Mulally borrowed $23.6 billion in 2006. He used this money as a cushion for a possible recession. This smart move helped Ford stay strong. While other big car companies went bankrupt, Ford did not need a government bailout. This helped keep the company stable during a global crisis.

Mulally made many big choices to focus on the Ford brand. He sold other car brands like Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin, and Volvo.

He also brought back the Taurus name for a popular car model. To show he believed in his company, he even drove a Ford hybrid car to a meeting in Washington, D.C. He also promised to take a much lower salary during tough times. These actions helped Ford become profitable again after many years of losses.

Because of his work, Mulally received many honors. He was named a Person of the Year by several groups.
