He worked very hard to reach his goals in science and flight. He wanted to study aeronautical engineering, which is the study of how things fly. To pay for his college, he joined the Army so he could use the G.I. Bill.

Borman's path to space was built on many steps of training. He first went to West Point and graduated in 1950. He was ranked eighth out of 670 students in his class. After that, he became a fighter pilot in the Air Force. He even served in the Philippines for a time. Later, he became a test pilot at Edwards Air Force Base.

A test pilot flies new or experimental planes to see how they work. He even went to a special school to learn about space flight. In this school, he used a jet called an F-104. The pilot would fly so high that the engine would stop working. This helped him learn how to handle a spacecraft.

In 1962, NASA chose Borman to be part of a new group of astronauts. He was part of the group known as the Next Nine. One of his big jobs was leading the Gemini 7 mission in 1966. This mission lasted 14 days, which set a record for how long astronauts could stay in space. Later, he was chosen to lead the Apollo 8 mission in December 1968.

One crew member took a famous photo called Earthrise. This photo showed our blue Earth rising over the edge of the Moon. On Christmas Eve, they even broadcast a reading from the Bible back to Earth.

For his great work, Borman received the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. During the Apollo 11 mission, he even worked at the White House. He watched the Moon landing on television with President Richard Nixon.

After his time with NASA, Borman moved into the world of business. He worked for Eastern Air Lines for many years. He served as the chief executive officer and the chairman of the board.

Under his leadership, the airline had its most profitable years. Later in his life, he lived in New Mexico and Montana. He ran a car dealership and even owned a cattle ranch. Borman lived a long and busy life until 2023. He showed us that with hard work, even the Moon is within reach.
