He was a very skilled pilot for the United States Navy. Shepard was born on November 18, 1923, in Derry, New Hampshire. He grew up with a sister named Polly. Even as a young boy, he was a very smart student. He actually skipped the sixth and eighth grades in school.

He loved airplanes and even started a model airplane club. This early love for flight shaped his whole life.

Shepard's journey to space happened in a few important steps. First, he became a naval aviator in 1947. Then, he worked as a test pilot in 1950. This job meant he flew new planes to see how they worked. In 1959, NASA chose him as one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts.

In May 1961, he flew the Mercury-Redstone 3 mission. He sat inside a spacecraft he named Freedom 7.

The craft went into space, but it could not stay in orbit. This made him the first American to travel into space.

Life was not always easy for the brave astronaut. In October 1963, he had to stop flying for a while. He had Ménière's disease, which is an illness of the inner ear. This condition caused him to feel very dizzy and sick.

It was a hard job to deal with such sickness. Luckily, a doctor performed surgery to fix it in 1968. This allowed him to return to his dream of flying. He eventually became a rear admiral in the Navy.

While on the Moon, he even hit two golf balls. This mission showed how much he loved exploring.

We can see Shepard's legacy in how we explore space today. He was part of the group that first sent Americans into orbit. His work helped people understand how to fly in space. He also showed that even with health problems, you can keep going.

He retired from both NASA and the Navy in 1974. Shepard passed away on July 21, 1998.
