Before he flew, he worked with bicycles and motorcycles. He was born in 1878 in Hammondsport, New York. His father was a harness maker named Frank Richmond Curtiss. Glenn even worked in a factory as a young man. He built a stencil machine to make work much faster.

He moved from bikes to powerful engines very quickly. In 1902, he began making his own motorcycle engines. He once used a tomato soup can to make a carburetor. A carburetor is a part that helps an engine run. In 1907, he set a world speed record in Florida. He used a V-8 engine that he built himself.

This record stood for many years. He was called the fastest man in the world.

Later, Glenn began to study how things fly. Alexander Graham Bell invited him to join a research group. This group was called the Aerial Experiment Association.

They worked together to build new flying machines. On July 4, 1908, Glenn flew a plane called the June Bug. It was the first public flight of a heavy machine in North America. He won a large prize for this flight. He also became the first pilot to get a license in 1911.

Glenn won many important races and made new inventions. In 1909, he won the Gordon Bennett Cup in France. He flew a biplane at a very high speed.

He also made ailerons, which are parts that help a plane turn. In 1910, he flew between Albany and New York City. This was the first long flight between two big cities. He won a $10,000 prize from Joseph Pulitzer for this trip. His work helped create the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company.

His inventions changed how the military used planes. He developed floats so planes could land on water.

This led to the creation of seaplanes. In 1910, a pilot named Eugene Ely took off from a ship. This was a huge step for the Navy. Curtiss also started a school to teach people how to fly. His planes were used in many wars later on. Many people still study his great work today.
