Allan Lockheed was a famous American engineer who helped change how we fly. He was born in Niles, California, on January 20, 1889. His mother, Flora, was a well-known writer and reporter. Even as a young boy, Allan loved working with machines. He spent his early years working as a mechanic in San Francisco. By 1909, he was already driving fast race cars. He eventually became a pilot and a flight instructor. These early days taught him how to build better machines for the sky.

Building a plane is a very careful way of working. In 1913, Allan and his brother Malcolm built the Model G seaplane. A seaplane is a craft that can land on water. They used mostly hand tools to build it in their spare time. After many months of hard work, the plane flew from the Golden Gate entrance to San Francisco Bay. On that first flight, it reached a height of 300 feet. It also traveled at a speed of 60 miles per hour. This was one of the first successful three-place seaplanes in the United States.

Learning from these early successes, the brothers started new companies. In 1916, they founded the Loughead Aircraft Manufacturing Company in Santa Barbara. They worked with a smart designer named Jack Northrop. Together, they built the F-1, which was a large flying boat. In 1918, they flew this plane from Santa Barbara to San Diego. They finished the 211-mile trip in 181 minutes, which set a record. Later, they tried to fly a version of the plane all the way to Washington, D.C. That long trip ended when the plane had an engine problem and crashed in Arizona.

Allan and Malcolm also made important changes to their family name. At first, they spelled it Loughead. However, people often said it the wrong way, like "Log-head." To make it easier, Malcolm changed the spelling to Lockheed for his brake company. Allan later used the same spelling for his aircraft business in 1926. This new company was called the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation. They started their work in a small garage in Hollywood. They used a special method called monocoque construction. This means the outer shell of the plane helps support its weight.

One of their most famous planes was the Vega. They built it with help from a man named Fred Keeler. The Vega was a very fast plane that could carry six people. It could fly for a long distance of 1,000 miles. It also had a cruising speed of 185 miles per hour. This plane came out at a great time for flying. In 1927, Charles Lindbergh flew across the ocean, which made many people excited about planes. The Vega showed how modern and fast aircraft could truly be. Allan's work helped pave the way for the many planes we see today.
