In 1913, they finished a plane called the Model G. It was a seaplane. This means it could land on water. It could carry three people. The brothers built it mostly with hand tools. It was a very successful plane.

Later, they started another company in Santa Barbara. They worked with Jack Northrop. He was a skilled designer. They built a plane called the F-1. It was a flying boat. It could carry ten people. In 1918, the F-1 set a speed record. It flew 211 miles in 181 minutes.

In 1926, they formed the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation. They used a new spelling for their name. They wanted it to be easy to say. They built a fast plane called the Vega. It used a monocoque fuselage. This is a shell that supports the plane's weight. The Vega could carry six people. It could fly for 1,000 miles.
