Malcolm Lockheed was a smart inventor. He worked on planes and cars.

As a boy, Malcolm played with kites. He learned about how things fly. Later, he worked as a mechanic. He and his brother Allan built a plane. It was called the Model G. This was the first successful tractor seaplane. A tractor seaplane is a plane that pulls its propeller in the front. This plane could land on water.

Malcolm also changed how cars stop. Old brakes used a metal rod. The rod could push with uneven force. This made the braking uneven. Malcolm made a hydraulic brake instead. This system uses fluid, or liquid, to push the brakes. The liquid keeps the force steady on the wheels. He even made a special hose for the liquid. This hose had a tube inside. The tube kept the hose from growing too big under pressure.

In 1926, the brothers started the Lockheed Aircraft Company. They changed their name to Lockheed. This was because people said their old name wrong. The company grew very large over many years.
