Malcolm Lockheed was a clever American inventor. He spent his life designing new things for planes and cars.

He was born in 1887 in Niles, California. As a boy, he loved playing with kites in Santa Barbara. He also learned about how things fly from a man named John J. Montgomery. This early interest helped him become a great engineer. He wanted to find better ways to make machines work.

One of his biggest ideas was a new way for cars to stop.

Before his invention, brakes used a metal rod to push. This rod could apply uneven force to the wheels. Malcolm created a hydraulic brake system to fix this. This way of working uses fluid, or liquid, to push the brakes. The liquid helps the force stay steady on the wheels. He even made a special flexible hose for the fluid. This hose had a tube inside so it would not expand under pressure.

Malcolm worked closely with his brother, Allan. In 1912, they started the Alco Hydro-Aeroplane Company. They spent eighteen months building a special plane called the Model G. This was the first successful tractor seaplane. A tractor seaplane has a propeller in the front that pulls it. This plane could land on water. They showed the plane at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in 1915. This fair celebrated the Panama Canal and San Francisco's recovery from an earthquake.

In 1926, the brothers started the Lockheed Aircraft Company. They chose this new spelling because people said their old name wrong. People often said "log-head" instead of Loughead. Malcolm also received a special honor from King Albert of Belgium in 1919. He was given the Order of the Golden Crown. His brake design was very popular too. The Duesenberg car company used his brakes for their 1921 Model A. He filed many patents for his work between 1917 and 1924.

Malcolm's work changed how we travel today. His aircraft company grew very large over many years. In 1995, the company became Lockheed Martin. Later in life, Malcolm moved to Mokelumne Hill, California. He even ran a shop where he made custom jewelry. He died in 1958 at the age of 71. He is remembered for his many inventions. His ideas helped make cars and planes safer for everyone.
