He was born in Paris on November 8, 1881. He studied engineering at the Sorbonne in Paris. He is known as a founder of modern rocketry and astronautics. This means he helped start the science of traveling into space. He worked alongside other famous names like Robert H. Goddard. His many ideas changed how we fly through the air.

Robert worked hard to make planes fly better. He first tried using a glider near Calais. This did not work because he did not fully understand it. He then created the aileron to help planes turn. An aileron is a small surface on the wing. He also invented the joystick for flight control. This is a handle that pilots use to steer. This invention became a standard part of almost all aircraft.

He even designed his own engines. He built a seven-cylinder engine for his REP 1 plane. This engine had 30 horsepower to help it fly.

His life was full of many different discoveries. In 1907, he made his first powered flight. Later, his REP 2 plane set a new record. It reached a high altitude during its flight in 1908. He also worked on many different types of engines. Some engines used 14 cylinders to reach 60 horsepower. He held about 120 patents for his many inventions. These included things like fuel pumps and car parts.

His family spent a lot of money to help him. This left them nearly broke, but he later became wealthy. He won money from his joystick patent after World War I.

Robert was also a very deep thinker about space. In 1913, he wrote about the energy needed to reach the Moon. He even suggested using atomic energy for space travel. He thought 400 kg of radium could power a ship. In 1930, he published a famous book called L'Astronautique. He and a friend named Jean-Jacques Barré studied liquid fuels. They tested a rocket engine using gasoline and liquid oxygen. One experiment with a different fuel caused a bad explosion. This accident cost Robert four fingers on his right hand.

His work helped many other scientists succeed. He and André-Louis Hirsch started the first space prize. It was called the Prix REP-Hirsch in 1928. This award helped people study the science of astronautics. Today, we still remember his great work in many ways. There is a crater on the Moon named after him. He is also in the International Space Hall of Fame. His ideas helped us move from planes to rockets.
