Qian Xuesen was a brilliant scientist who changed how we understand flight. He was an expert in aerodynamics, which is the study of how air moves around objects. He also helped create engineering cybernetics, a way to study how machines control themselves. His work helped people understand how to fly much faster through the air. Because of his great ideas, he became a leader in rocket science. People in China even gave him the nickname "the King of Rocketry."

Qian's work often focused on how fluids and air move. He and a scientist named Theodore von Kármán created the Kármán-Tsien rule. This rule helps experts estimate how air behaves when things move very fast. He also studied how to keep machines stable using cybernetics. This field looks at how systems can use information to stay on track. His books and rules helped many other engineers build better machines.

Qian spent many years studying in different places. He earned his first degree in mechanical engineering in Shanghai in 1934. Later, he moved to the United States to study at MIT. He finished his master's degree there in 1936. Then, he went to Caltech to earn a doctorate in 1939. At Caltech, he worked with a famous group of scientists. They even helped start the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

His life in the United States was not always easy. In 1950, the government accused him of having communist sympathies. Even though there was no proof, they took away his security clearance. This was a special permit needed to see secret information. For five years, he lived under house arrest. This meant he could not leave his home freely. He was finally allowed to leave for China in 1955. He traveled on a ship called the SS President Cleveland.

After returning to China, Qian helped build a huge space program. He helped lead the development of the Dongfeng ballistic missile. He also worked on the "Two Bombs, One Satellite" project. His work helped create many important research systems in his home country. He was even elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1957. His family also had many smart people in science. His cousin was an engineer, and another relative won a Nobel Prize.
