Armstrong's journey to the Moon involved many difficult steps. First, he studied aeronautical engineering at Purdue University. He then served as a pilot in the United States Navy. During the Korean War, he flew jet planes like the Grumman F9F Panther.

His father took him to air races when he was only two years old. He even flew in a Ford Trimotor when he was very young. By age 16, he had his own student flight certificate. He was an active Boy Scout and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. These early years helped him love flying more than anything else.

On July 20, 1969, a huge event happened for the whole world.

Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed the Lunar Module, called Eagle. Michael Collins stayed in the Command Module, named Columbia, to orbit the Moon. Armstrong stepped onto the Moon and spoke famous words. He said it was a small step for a man but a giant leap for mankind. About 530 million people watched this live on television. This mission helped the United States win the Space Race.

Armstrong received many honors for his amazing work. President Richard Nixon gave him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
