This goal was set by President John F. Kennedy in May 1961. He wanted the United States to do this before the decade ended. The mission was a major part of the Space Race. This was a competition between the United States and the Soviet Union.

The spacecraft used to reach the Moon had three main parts. First, there was the command module, named Columbia. This part held the three astronauts and was the only part to return to Earth.

Second, the service module provided power, oxygen, and water. Third, the lunar module, named Eagle, was used to land on the Moon. The Eagle had two stages. The descent stage had a large engine to land the craft. The ascent stage had a small engine to help the astronauts leave the Moon.

After three days of traveling, the Eagle landed in the Sea of Tranquility.

Armstrong and Aldrin walked on the surface for about two and a half hours. They collected 21.5 kg of Moon material.

Many people around the world watched this event. About 600 million people saw the moonwalk on television. This was about one-fifth of all people on Earth at that time.

When Armstrong stepped onto the Moon, he said it was a small step for man but a giant leap for mankind. The crew returned to Earth on July 24. They landed in the Pacific Ocean by splashing down in the water.
