Apollo 11 was a historic American spaceflight that first landed humans on the Moon.

This mission took place from July 16 to July 24, 1969. It was the fifth crewed mission in NASA's Apollo program. The mission was a major achievement in human history. It helped scientists learn about the lunar surface. It also showed the world what humans could achieve through technology.

The spacecraft used for this mission was built in three distinct parts. First was the command module, named Columbia. This module housed the three astronauts. It was also the only part of the spacecraft to return to Earth.

Second was the service module, or SM. This part provided the command module with propulsion and electrical power. It also supplied necessary oxygen and water for the crew. Third was the lunar module, named Eagle. The Eagle consisted of two separate stages. The descent stage used a large engine and fuel tanks to land on the Moon. The ascent stage was lighter and contained a cabin for two astronauts. It used a small engine to return them to lunar orbit.

The mission relied on a complex process called lunar orbit rendezvous. In this maneuver, two spacecraft navigate through space to meet up in orbit. The Saturn V rocket launched the spacecraft from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

After a three-day transit, the mission split into different roles. Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit aboard the command module Columbia. Meanwhile, Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin descended to the surface in the Eagle. They landed in a region called the Sea of Tranquility on July 20 at 20:17 UTC.

The crew of Apollo 11 consisted of three experienced astronauts. Neil Armstrong served as the mission Commander. Michael Collins was the Command Module Pilot. Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin served as the Lunar Module Pilot.

All three men were on their second and final spaceflight. This mission was the result of years of preparation. It built upon technologies from the earlier Mercury and Gemini programs. NASA also used new advances like silicon integrated circuit chips in the Apollo Guidance Computer. The program had to overcome a tragic setback in January 1967. That was the Apollo 1 launchpad fire that killed three astronauts.

Apollo 11 was the culmination of the Space Race. This was a geopolitical competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. The rivalry was rooted in the Cold War. The race began after the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1 in 1957. This event sparked fears about technological superiority. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy set a national goal. He challenged the United States to land a man on the Moon and return him safely. He wanted this to happen before the end of the decade.

The mission's impact was felt globally. An estimated 600 million people watched the moonwalk live on television. This was roughly one-fifth of the entire world's population at the time.

Armstrong became the first human to walk on the Moon. He was followed by Aldrin nineteen minutes later. They spent about two and a half hours walking on the surface. They planted an American flag and collected 21.5 kg of lunar material.

These samples helped identify three previously unknown minerals. They also helped scientists understand the Moon better for many years.

After more than 21 hours on the surface, the astronauts rejoined Collins in orbit. The crew returned to Earth on July 24. They landed in the Pacific Ocean by splashing down in the water.

The astronauts were honored with many awards. They received ticker-tape parades and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Today, parts of the mission remain in different places. The command module Columbia is at the National Air and Space Museum. The descent stage of the Eagle remains on the lunar surface.
